Unknown Disease In China Maybe “Purple Death”

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Chinese health authorities have not been able to identify the mysterious strain, while experts will not rule out the return of severe acute respiratory syndrome-atypical pneumonia.

Cases of a previously unknown form of pneumonia were reported in China at the end of December 2019. According to the latest data of the municipal health Commission of the city of Wuhan, 59 patients with unknown viral pneumonia were recorded — seven patients are in critical condition.

Doctors have not yet been able to determine which strain of the virus causes this disease. At the same time, the forecasts are quite pessimistic, CNN reported.

So, experts do not rule out the possibility of a return of severe acute respiratory syndrome, known as purple death or atypical pneumonia.

Recall that atypical pneumonia from November 2002 to July 2003 spread in 37 countries-it fell ill more than eight thousand people, of which about eight hundred died. The disease was caused by a coronavirus.

One of the versions of the disease is a transmission from animals: many victims worked with food. There is no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the mysterious virus, but scientists note that this does not indicate that there is no such risk.

Authorities in other countries have not yet announced the appearance of previously unknown forms of pneumonia — it is possible that the strain has not yet reached the borders of China.
