Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Iran Rob Macaire was briefly detained in the Iranian capital Saturday without cause. There is widespread speculation the detention was due to the UK government’s strong words directed at Iran for shooting down Ukrainian Flight 752.
The arrest of our Ambassador in Tehran without grounds or explanation is a flagrant violation of international law. The Iranian government is at a cross-roads moment. It can continue its march towards pariah status with all the political and economic isolation that entails.
We now need a comprehensive, transparent and independent international investigation and the repatriation of those who died. The UK will work closely with Canada, Ukraine and our other international partners affected by this accident to ensure this happens. Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister
