The agreement will open the way for the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
The US and the Taliban will sign a peace agreement on February 29 in Qatar, US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said.
“We are preparing to sign a peace agreement on February 29,” Pompeo said in a statement. “Inter-Afghan negotiations will begin soon after that.”
According to a US State Department official, the signing of the peace agreement will be preceded by seven days of “reducing violence” that will begin on Friday evening.
Pompeo expressed confidence that the inter-Afghan talks will lead to a permanent ceasefire agreement and “a road map for the future of Afghanistan.”
The Taliban issued a similar message.
