The Indonesian authorities plan to place those infected with the coronavirus on the uninhabited island of Galang. The Jakarta Post newspaper with reference to the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Hadi Tjahjanto, reports this.

According to the commander-in-chief, Galang Island was chosen as the site for the hospital, as several buildings that were used in 1979-1996 for a refugee camp from Vietnam were preserved there. The island has access to clean water and electricity. It is also located 50 km from Hang Nadim international airport.

Hadi Tjahjanto announced that the hospital would also function as a quarantine center. It is expected that the hospital will be able to accept up to 1 thousand patients. The Minister of public works and housing, in turn, said that such a hospital could be equipped in a month.

On March 2, the first two cases of infection with a new type of COVID-19 coronavirus were detected in Indonesia. According to the country’s President, Joko Widodo, a 64-year-old woman and her 31-year-old daughter were infected. The head of state noted that the country has prepared more than 100 hospitals with isolation rooms and necessary medical equipment.
