Chinese authorities intend to use the Avigan anti-flu medication for the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia, NHK reported.

According to the head of the National center for the development of biotechnology, Zhang Xinming, the Chinese authorities have tested it in the cities of Wuhan and Shenzhen. The tests involved 240 and 80 patients, respectively.

On average, the patients ‘ temperature returned to normal in two and a half days – without the use of medication, the same process took more than four days. Four and a half days after using Avigan, the subjects had a cough. In those who did not take the medicine, this symptom of the coronavirus passes in almost six days.

At the same time, Zhang Xinming stressed that the patients who used the drug were retested for coronavirus four days later, which showed a negative result. In those who did not take the drug, the test showed a negative result on average only after 11 days.

In December last year, China notified the World Health Organization of an outbreak of unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan. Experts have identified the causative agent of the disease — a new type of coronavirus 2019-nCoV. The World Health Organization gave the disease the official name COVID-19, and on March 11 recognized the outbreak as a pandemic.
According to the latest data, the number of infected people worldwide exceeded 200 thousand, of which about eight thousand died.
