Hip Hop Royalty – DMX Verzuz Snoop Dogg
Next up in the Verzuz series are to bonafide legends of Hip Hop and Rap, DMX vs. Snoop Dogg. Together these to mega artists have sold tens of millions of records and have forever cemented their legacy as hip hop royalty.
Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. (born October 20, 1971), better known by the stage name Snoop Dogg as well as Snoop Doggy Dogg and Snoop Lion, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, media personality, entrepreneur, and actor. His music career began in 1992 when he was discovered by Dr. Dre and featured on Dre’s solo debut, “Deep Cover”, and then on Dre’s solo debut album, The Chronic.
Earl Simmons (born December 18, 1970), better known by his stage name DMX, is an American rapper and songwriter. He began rapping in the early 1990s, and released his debut album It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot in 1998, to both critical acclaim and commercial success, selling 251,000 copies within its first week of release. He released his best-selling album, … And Then There Was X, in 1999, which included the hit single “Party Up (Up in Here)”. Since his debut, DMX has released seven studio albums.
The first live cast premiered on Instagram Live late March 2020. The two were also the first challengers, who then began to curate the future line up/matches.
The VERZUZ series brand gained its official trademark in April 2020, brought by Timbaland. The planned history of creating a live battle was conceived from the idea of Timbaland and Swizz back in 2017, which led to a ‘producer clash’ battle during the Hot 97 Summer Jam concert in 2018.
The live show consist of 2 challengers in the entertainment industry who compete their best hit record whether being their created musical production, songwriting or vocal production, while also celebrating each other’s achievements. A winner is totally according to a viewers bias opinion, There are no actual winners chosen.
In an ABC News interview, Swizz Beatz stated “The people won, the culture won, music won” as reference to the music sales and online streams gradually increasing due to both newfound interest and curiosity as well as recognition of the participating artist rising once again, creating “The Verzuz Effect”.
Even though no winners are selected because it is seen as a celebration between the artists, Billboard Magazine has began releasing their scorecard and breakdowns of the battles and selected their winner based on their observations, tallying scores for each round and ending with the ‘people’s choice’ but an overall winner is crowned based on the scoring system.
The webcast platform served as an anticipated online streaming show during the COVID-19 pandemic, in ways to keep viewers at home entertained during the crisis. The official ‘audio-track only’ recap of Verzuz can also be played on TIDAL music streaming services as well as Spotify.
VERZUZ was one of the few popular independent live streaming webcasts to showcase during the pandemic alongside Tory Lanez independent curated Instagram live show, “Quarantine Radio”
