Iran claimed the jet was accidentally shot down by the Iranian Military
On January 8th, 2020, US Government and Pentagon officials reporting Iran accidentally shot down Ukrainian Flight 752 based on analysis of satellites, radar and electronic data collected from the US military and intelligence.
At first, Iranian officials refuted the claims by US President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Ukranian Flight 752 was shot down by the Iranian military.
Flight 752 was shot down just minutes after take-off by surface to air missiles based on evidence gathered by Canadian and American intelligence agencies. Several videos have now surfaced showing Flight 752 being struck by missiles and crashing down in a fiery explosion. Despite those videos and debris of missile remnants found at the crash site, the Iranian government remained in denial about how the jetliner was downed.
After three days of investigation lead by an international coalition that produced indisputable evidence, Iran’s President Rouhani took responsibility for what he called human error.
“Armed Forces’ internal investigation has concluded that regrettably missiles fired due to human error caused the horrific crash of the Ukrainian plane & death of 176 innocent people. Investigations continue to identify & prosecute this great tragedy & unforgivable mistake.
The Islamic Republic of Iran deeply regrets this disastrous mistake. My thoughts and prayers go to all the mourning families. I offer my sincerest condolences.” Said Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani
The Iranian military took decisive action and downed the flight they perceived to be American military planes. This shocking admission by the Iranian military that they do not have the capabilities to differentiate from a civilian to military jet is quite telling.
An American military fighter jet would never fly at low altitudes directly into dozens of hostile missiles. They are the most highly trained war machine with trillions of dollars invested into equipment that can neutralize their enemies remotely or miles away.
As relations remain tense between Iran and the United States, many families are still searching for closure and compensation for the tragic event. And with less then two weeks left in the trump administration, many fear the unstable president will incite a war with Iran which will almost certainly put the investigation of Ukrainian Flight PS752 on the back burner.
