At 91 years old, Mikhail Gorbachev, reformist Soviet Union Leader, passed away after influential life.
Mikhail S. Gorbachevwas born into a farming family. He worked until 1952 when he ventured to Moscow to attend Law School. While in school, Gorbachev became a part of the Communist party.
Gorbachev held many positions and eventually landed the Secretary-General of the Soviet Union in 1985. He also became the youngest ever to hold that position.
His most notable actions in this role were the Glasnost and Perestroika policies. Glashow means openness, which refers to the police’s freedom of expression and information. Perestroika meant restructuring and was the first to try to democratize the Soviet political system. This policy included multicandidate contests along with ballots.
In addition to these new ideas, Gorbachev played a significant role in ending the cold war. From 1989-1990 Gorbachev withdrew the troops stationed in Europe and stopped the segregation between East and West Germany. Gorbachev also created a lifelong relationship with President Ronald Regan. This friendship allowed for the termination of the long-range weapons each nation had. This elimination enabled the end of the cold war. Gorbachev honored Regeans friendship by attending his funeral in 2004.
For his feat, Gorbachev received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. However, the people became hungry and angry with the many changes from the new policies. In August of 1991, a Coup sent a message to Gorbachev, who took a backseat and resigned as the Secretary-General and became President. However, only a few months later, in December of 1991, Gorbachev resigned from Presidency, and the U.S.S.R. ended the next day.
Mikhail Gorbachev accumulated many sincere thoughts from leaders worldwide after his death on August 30, 2022, from a long-term illness. President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Borris Johnson, and many more acknowledged Gorbachev’s courage and influence.
