Xi Jinping Secures 3rd Term As Party Leader And Remains China’s President

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Xi Jinping is China’s seventh President after being elected in 2012

Xi Jinping has been named the leader of China for the next five years. Xi Jinping’s unprecedented third term has signified the party’s approval of the direction of his vision for China in the years and possibly decades to come. In 2018, the National People’s Congress voted to eliminate presidential term limits 2,958 in favour, two opposed, and three abstaining.

Xi’s election to a third term will focus on the world’s second-largest economy, which was brought to a standstill by the pandemic. Since the world depends on China for manufacturing, protecting the global economy from another COVID-19 outbreak will be a priority for Xi and his new seven-person standing committee.

One of those new committee members advising Xi is Li Qiang, the Chief of Shanghai. Qiang was the second on stage following President Xi at the Sunday convention at the Great Hall of the People. The party loyalist will become the party’s second-ranking Politburo Standing Committee member. In March, after two terms as premier, Li Keqiang will step down and be succeeded by him.

Qiang oversaw Shanghais’s COVID-19 lockdown and will be tasked with mitigating any virus spread. Today China has implemented some of the most robust COVID-19 prevention procedures to ensure any traces of COVID are mitigated immediately.

China has come under criticism for its strict COVID-19 policies and lockdown procedures. However, they were criticized initially for not doing enough to contain the spread of the virus at the start of the pandemic. No country wants its citizens to have COVID or to be in a lockdown situation, and at the same time, no one wants to see another global economic shutdown.

The new administration will focus on keeping China’s economy growing; it is very likely to see planned state visits to Western and European countries and vice versa. While COVID will be a priority of Xi’s third term, climate change, national security, and regional stability will also be equally crucial to the country.
