U.S Department Of Justice, Drops Charges Against Huawei C.F.O, Meng Wanzhou

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The charges stem from allegations brought by the Trump regime in 2018

Chinese Huawei Technologies’ Chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in 2018 at the request of U.S. President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice, which strained U.S.-China relations. U.S. prosecutors filed a petition on Thursday asking the judge to dismiss charges of bank fraud and other crimes against her.

The U.S. government has been a staunch adversary of Huawei and its 5G systems. The Trump administration had made several allegations against the Chinese cell phone company for being a significant risk to U.S. national security. They also accused the Huaewi C.F.O. of violating international sanctions against Iran. The tech giant’s C.F.O. was arrested at the request of the United States once she entered Canadian jurisdiction, where they began extradition procedures to bring her to the United States. The filing by the U.S department of justice to drop the charges against Meng Wanzhou comes precisely four years from the date of her detaining.

The US Justice Department and Meng Wanzhou reached a deferred prosecution agreement in September of 2021, under which she would plead not guilty but acknowledge the allegations against her. The U.S. agreed to later drop the charges against Meng Wanzhou and have her pay an undisclosed financial penalty.

Under the Trump regime, relationships with allies such as Canada, France and Germany were severely strained and are still a work in progress since the election of President Joe Biden. There is no benefit to having the world’s two largest economies at odds with each other. With disgraced U.S. President Trump’s failure to get re-elected, America, with its warts and all, is slowly regaining its presence on the world stage.

In spite of its claim to be the greatest country on the planet, America still has a long way to go; its history of racism, human rights abuse, and discrimination against migrants, women, and lack of universal healthcare, as well as its deplorable record of senseless gun violence and voter suppression, indicate they still have a long way to go.
